IELTS Exam Day Checklist 2026: What to Bring & What to Expect
You have spent months studying, learning the formats, and taking practice tests. Now, the big day is finally here.
Treat your IELTS exam day like a critical project launch: your success depends just as much on flawless execution and logistics as it does on your English skills. Waking up in a panic because you can’t find your passport is the fastest way to ruin your Band Score.
To ensure you walk into the test center calm, focused, and ready to succeed, we have compiled the perfect 2026 IELTS Exam Day Checklist.
The “Must-Haves”: Your Entry Tickets
If you forget these items, you will not be allowed to take the test, and you will not get a refund. Double-check this list the night before.
- Your Original ID Document: This is the most critical item. You must bring the exact same Passport or National ID card that you used to book your test.
- Important 2026 Rule: Photocopies, digital copies on your phone, or expired IDs are strictly forbidden.
- Test Taker Portal Confirmation: Bring a printed copy (or have the digital copy ready on your phone before you hand it over) of your booking confirmation email. This contains your candidate number, room details, and precise start times.
The “Allowed” Items: What You Can Take Into the Room
The IELTS test room has incredibly strict security protocols. You are only allowed to bring a few specific items to your desk.
- A Transparent Water Bottle: You are allowed to bring water, but it must be in a completely clear plastic bottle with no labels, words, or logos.
- Stationery (For Paper-Based Tests Only): If you are taking the traditional paper test, you can bring:
- 2-3 HB Pencils (Pens are not allowed for Listening/Reading).
- A pencil sharpener.
- An eraser (with no cardboard cover or writing on it).
- Note for Computer-Delivered IELTS: If you are taking the computer-delivered test, the center will provide paper and pencils for your notes. You do not need to bring your own.
The “Absolute No-Gos”: What to Leave Behind
Test centers provide secure lockers for your personal belongings. The following items are strictly banned from the examination room. If you are caught with them, you will be disqualified immediately.
| Banned Item Category | Examples of What to Leave in the Locker |
| Electronics | Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, e-readers. |
| All Watches | Smartwatches, digital watches, and even traditional analog watches. (There will be a clock on the wall or screen). |
| Bags & Wallets | Backpacks, purses, luggage, and thick wallets. |
| Study Materials | Dictionaries, notes, textbooks, blank paper, or flashcards. |
| Food & Other Drinks | Coffee, tea, snacks, or chewing gum (unless you have pre-approved medical clearance). |
The 24-Hour Countdown: Pre-Exam Strategy
Logistics matter just as much as your packing list. Follow this timeline to minimize stress.
The Night Before
- Pack your clear plastic bag: Put your ID, clear water bottle, and stationery in a clear ziplock bag and leave it by the door.
- Plan your route: Check the test center location on a map app. Account for morning traffic, bus delays, or parking situations.
- Set two alarms: Do not rely on just one device to wake you up.
The Morning of the Test
- Eat a low-sugar, high-protein breakfast: The IELTS test takes nearly 3 hours with no breaks. Avoid sugar crashes by eating foods like eggs, oatmeal, or nuts.
- Dress in layers: Test center temperatures are notoriously unpredictable. Wear a comfortable t-shirt with a zip-up hoodie or sweater so you can easily adjust if you get too hot or too cold.
- Arrive early: Aim to arrive at the test center at least 45 minutes to 1 hour before the test starts. You need this time to check in, scan your fingerprint, take your official photograph, and put your items in a locker.
What to Expect During Check-In
When you arrive, the staff will guide you through a highly secure check-in process:
- Identity Verification: Staff will check your Passport/ID against your booking.
- Biometrics: They will take a high-resolution photograph of you (this photo will appear on your official Test Report Form) and scan your finger.
- Security Scan: You may be asked to empty your pockets or be scanned with a metal detector wand.
